Why Your Scale is Helping you Pack on the Pounds

The walk from your bedroom to the bathroom in the morning can feel like a death march. Not because you need to navigate the shoes strewn across your floor or avoid ramming your calf on the corner of your coffee table in a dark sleepy haze, but at the end of the perilous path, your biggest critic awaits to determine your sense of self-worth for the day – your scale.

As a bride, I know you want to lose weight for your wedding. It’s almost an unavoidable expectation these days that so many of us feel obligated to fulfill. And weighing yourself feels like a necessary evil, a sick obsession to make sure you are on track. But the process can seriously weigh you down…

As you stand in the bathroom, you start removing every article of clothing. You peel off your camisole and shorts, your underwear, even your rings and earrings. Oddly, this is probably the only time of day when you are truly naked. It’s just you and your body. And instead of feeling strong, beautiful and empowered, you feel vulnerable and judged.

But there is something very wrong with this picture, because the scale really doesn’t reveal anything of value.

First, the scale lies. The number can fluctuate a lot in a 24-hour period. Things like what you ate the night before, how much water you drank, where you are in your cycle, if you worked out or not, all effect the number, but have nothing to do with your health. Not even to mention that muscle weighs a lot more than fat (and it’s fit and strong we’re going for here, not an arbitrary number on a scale).

Second, the best judge of how healthy you are is how you feel. Think about it: your scale can’t tell you how you slept last night, how you felt after Chinese take-out, or how clear your skin is. These are all true signs of health. Tune into how you feel while you are eating, working out and living your life- your body will communicate health by your energy, ability to sleep, skin quality, and mood.

Here’s the reality: Have you ever actually been happy with the number on the scale? If you gained weight, you’re a fat loser. If you stayed the same you are lazy. If you lost weight, you could’ve lost more and aren’t trying hard enough.

Getting your daily dose of self-esteem bashing from your scale causes stress, poor body image and really crappy moods. And what happens when women get moody? We eat. Weighing your self is actually making you fat, not thin. And the reality is, we all know when we lose weight. Our jeans feel looser, our skin is tighter, our face is less puffy. It’s not some big mystery. A scale can’t tell you how toned your arms are getting from doing a million triceps curls, or how radiant your eyes look from taking care of yourself.

My advice to you? Take steps to wean yourself off of the scale. The number on it means nothing. It is not an indicator of how you feel or how you look. It tells you nothing of importance. If you weigh yourself everyday – stop. Try instead to weigh yourself just once a week. If you weigh yourself every week, try cutting back to once a month. And if you really want to cultivate health in your life and develop a positive, trusting relationship with your body- just throw it away.

I promise – you will be far better off without it.

In the morning, go through this routine instead: undress, stand in front of your mirror and tell yourself you look beautiful (even if you don’t believe it at first). Admire and adore your body. Picture how you want to look in your wedding dress. Now hop into the shower feeling empowered, sexy and healthy.

Who knew a headband could stir up so much chatter! I received so many messages about the headband I wore to the Atelier Aimee event we told you about last week.

The gorgeous headband was purchased at the opening party of the new J. Crew Bridal boutique, located at at 769 Madison Avenue. The boutique is filled with bridal gowns, cocktail dresses, and more beautiful jewelry than even the ladies of DM Events can buy! Our favorite detail? The wall-o-cardigans (Obvi!) Can't you imagine each of your Maids wearing one?

Let me just say that when you are trying on headbands and Darcy Miller says, "Oooo, I like that one on you" YOU BUY IT!

There has been a real movement in the last few years to add a charitable component to weddings ranging from donations in lieu of favors to volunteer expeditions rather than honeymoons. So when we see a simple opportunity to give back, we have to share it!

Through its Threads for Threads program, for every tie or bow tie purchased, FIGS will donate a uniform to a child in order for them to attend school. According to FIGS' website, "In many parts of Africa a child may not attend school without a proper uniform. Unfortunately many areas are stricken with poverty and so countless children do not have uniforms, resulting in lack of education quickly becoming a widespread epidemic. The government provides school uniforms where it can, but of course there are not adequate resources available for that to be enough for all children. For every FIGS tie or bow tie you buy, a uniform is given to a child in order for them to attend school."

As a wedding planner, I’ve had my taste of cakes! Melina and I very rarely turn down the opportunity to tag along with our couples at a tasting, especially a cake tasting!

However, it is a little known fact that by the time your cake makes it’s grand appearance, many of your guests will either be partying like it’s 1999 or too busy throwing back your signature cocktail to focus on the cake. However, when the cake is good, the word spreads fast! Sure, it’s been sitting there all night looking pretty and it’s a little hard to believe that a cake can taste this good! Well, it can! Bridal Brunch

In a city where excess is king, we think that hosting an intimate affair has become a bit of a lost art. So if a wedding of excess is not your style, why not have a brunch instead!

Treat Yourself!

We’re not usually in the market for spoiling ourselves – that’s usually for our brides! But recently, we attended a weekend of R&R for wedding industry vendors in the Hudson Valley. It was hosted by one of our Elan Artists (could we love them anymore?!), and was held at one of our new favorite venues, Buttermilk Falls Inn & Spa.

Buttermilk Falls is located in Ulster County – don’t worry, we didn’t know where that was either – it is about 90 minutes outside of the NYC. It was renovated a couple of years ago to combine modern day luxury and country charm. The result is perfection!

How did we get there, you ask… Go Brilliant of course! You never heard of it? Well, listen up… they are officially the most fabulous mode of transportation we know. How many times have you seen a bride try to stuff herself into a limo without creasing her dress or messing up her hair!? None of these issues apply with Go Brilliant since you can actually stand in their vehicles! Once you get in and seat down, you are really in the lap of luxury with satellite TV and radio available at the press of a button!

We were treated to dinner by Cobblestone Catering, who traveled up for the occasion. Cobblestone is located in Brooklyn and while they cater all over the area, they also have a shop, Cobblestone Foods. In fact, as soon as you are done reading this, you should head over there and order a Carrot Cake Doozie – they are seriously awesome!

We were entertained by the truly enchanting, modern day sirens of Elan Artists: La Femme Classique, La Vida Con Fuego and Loukoum. We have all heard too many typical wedding bands and these ladies are a breath of fresh air with a sound that is all their own!

We are hope that you are inspired by photos below. They were taken by Mel Barlow, Carlos Andres Varela, and Allan Zepeda – they are truly amazing photographers with unparalleled talent. We are always telling clients that if there is one place to spend money it is on photography – your photos are the only thing you take with you when the big day is over!

Memory Keeping In Style

Saying “I Do” is a life decision, not a design decision so if decorating with formal wedding portraits is not really your style, why not think outside the box! Yes, you will still have your favorite wedding photo hung in the bedroom and another strategically placed on his desk where his secretary is sure to see it, but Martha Stewart has some other ways to commemorate the big day…

Bouquet - There is, of course, a sentimental attachment to your bouquet – not to mention the fact that it may be the most expensive floral arrangement you ever hold in your hand. Many of our brides are convinced by family and friends (usually an aging aunt!) to dry their favorite bloom from the bouquet - but once the bloom is dry, they have no idea what to do with it! With a little creativity, you can create a series of framed art pieces using the petals of multiple flowers in your bouquet. Lay the cut blossoms between newsprint, and put between the pages of a heavy book (phone books work perfectly!) for 10-12 days. Use tweezers to transfer the flowers to card stock and arrange! Secure the flowers with a drop of glue on the underside.

Photos - We can not stress how important photography is – we also can not stress how FUN a photobooth is! The pictures that result from the photobooth are always our favorite because they are not staged or forced – they are glimpses into the joy shared by family and friends on your special day. Many couples will put the strips in scrapbooks that will sit on the shelf for years – why not frame them so you can have a visual reminder of the fun and excitement of the day. Arrange strips and secure with double-stick tape.

With both projects, you have an opportunity to show your creative side and express the fun and whimsy that went into your amazing day!

It’s always a treat to stumble upon a great new find! This weekend, as we were walking to a site visit with our client, we passed Paper Love. From across the street, it looked like an ordinary cutesy stationery store, but up close it was a little piece of letterpress heaven! Paper Love, located in Park Slope, opened its doors in November 2008 and not only provides stationery and invitations but beautiful letterpress albums. Yet another reason to love Brooklyn!

Goodbye Cookie-Cutter Wedding, Hello Fun!

Clients always tell us that they want their weddings to be fun… we really can not think of anything more fun that inviting StudioBooth to the big day! StudioBooth is the brainchild of photographers Dan Eckstein and Dustin Ross who decided that life was to short to be serious all the time – especially on your wedding day!

StudioBooth is a mobile photo studio that lets your event photograph itself! Similar to a photo booth, but expandable for groups of any size. Guests trigger the camera with a wireless remote and the images are then instantly projected for all to see! (No worries, a professional photographer is also on hand to trigger the camera if your guests prefer.) A slideshow of the photos runs throughout the event and afterward all of the images are uploaded to an online gallery for your guests to view, print and share. Each StudioBooth installation is custom tailored and can be personalized with various props and backgrounds (our fav part!) In a city where vintage is king, we are surprised that this craze did not hit earlier! Amanda Heer of Brooch Bouquets, a California-based florist, has been dazzling brides with her brooch bouquet creations. All you have to do is scour vintage shops - or grandma's jewelry box - to collect brooches, earrings, pendants, watches, and cuff links. (We confess to being partial to this idea only if the bouquet is made of vintage pieces from family and friends.) Once you have about 50 pieces, send them to Amanda, who will add in a few of her own to create a bouquet that is truly a work of art. You can even point out your favorite pieces and she will ensure that they are prominently displayed!

When David Arrick, formerly an asset backed securities attorney for a major Wall Street law, read a magazine article that mentioned that cupcakes were a combination of everything "pink, sweet, cute, and magical", he felt it was time to take matters into his own hands and butch it up. The dress, the shoes – how will they make it through the day unscathed? Luckily for our brides, we’re always thinking about plan B (and sometimes even C, D and E!) If there’s a strong probability of snow on the wedding day, you might have to box up those beautiful Louboutins and go for something more practical. We recommend UGGs. I know what you’re thinking “I’m not wearing Uggs on my wedding day!” Well, I can assure you, white gowns and dirty snow do not mix well. Plus, they come “blinged” out now!

Calligraphy seems to be a lost art these days, replaced by computer printed envelopes and labels. But a few people, still know the joy of hand calligraphy... we are part of that few!

We were recently introduced to the amazing work of Brooklyn-based Paperfinger which offers custom alternatives to traditional calligraphy, handwriting and illustration. Their work is beautiful and ranges from wedding stationary to monograms to transcription of love letters. They also make return address stamps which make a great wedding gift! We are particularly taken by their adorable, custom wedding maps!

Curious about the company name? The word paperfinger refers to the small lever found in antique typewriters that holds the paper in place on the platen (roller). Who knew!

Since it was so cold in the studio today that we considered typing this with gloves on, we think it is appropriate that today is Winter Wedding Wednesday! Today is all about pinecones... sure you can fill a hurricane vase with them or use them to decorate your cake, but here are a few out of the box ideas!

Incorporate them into your bouquet... or better yet, who needs flowers? Use pinecones instead, as done in this amazing creation by Rosenow Floral.

Set the tone for your winter wedding by incorporating pinecones into your stationary - invitations, menu cars, escort cards, and more. These adorable escort cards are part of a line of stationary from The Green Kangaroo.

And for a fun twist on decorating with a monogram, checkout out these pinecone initials. Boy, is it cold out there! Temperatures are dropping and we’re looking for any excuse to stay inside the studio to keep warm! But more importantly, how are our brides going to stay warm during this winter chill? So, this week is all about braving the cold and staying warm!

Nothing says warm like wool (and no fabric says winter like a knit pattern!) Whether you are a DYI bride or a label-maven, all things knit are en vogue these days. Even if all you have mastered is Knit 2, Purl 2, you can create some beautiful wedding accents.

Check out this ring pillow from Etsy. A few delicate touches including lace and a pendant, give the pillow a vintage feel - which we love! Julie Schuett's fabulous hand made wrap is sure to keep you warm before saying I-Do (this wrap was recently featured in Minnesota Bride.) And don't forget the details - why not add yarn to your stationary? It may be a new year but the dessert craze at weddings is here to stay! As 2009 wrapped up, we saw a transition from candy bars to dessert bars. Now in 2010, couples are looking for a way to make their desserts unique, colorful, and most importantly FUN!

Nothing says winter like a block of ice! But rather than pour rock salt over it - how about making it a focal point of your cocktail hour?

You would be hard-pressed to find an ice sculpture that we like, but this frosty bar is right up our alley! As featured by Martha Stewart, this appetizer bar was sculpted by Shintaro Okamoto of Okamoto Studio in NYC. "Set into hand-carved depressions, tumblers of clear spirits make jewel-like aperitifs. Individual servings of seafood are presented in stainless-steel saucers. Let it snow, let it snow, let is snow! (Sorry, now you will have the song stuck in your head, too!) We love winter weddings because we get to incorporate snowflakes! As with any theme, the key is to not overdo it, but with a few subtle touches, guests will watch you say "I Do" in your very own Winter Wonderland!

Here are some of our favorite snowflake ideas:

Snowflakes on the Table - All of you DM Events fans know that we strongly believe in incorporating your theme into your stationary, especially your menu cards. But think bigger! You can rent linen with shimmering snowflakes sewn into the fabric - nothing says wedding chic like seasonal linen! Note - for a cost effective alternative, rent a white shimmer or organza linen and sprinkle snowflake confetti over it - this DYI project will save you about half the price! Snowflakes on your Cake - Instead of having your baker sculpt flowers, ask for snowflakes! this is a gorgeous, simple way to dress up your winter wedding cake. If you have a dedicated spot at your wedding to showcase your cake, hang snowflake ornaments in the area - it is a dramatic look and makes for a great photo op! Note - having your baker sculpt snowflakes can be pricy so for a cost effective alternative, you can purchase 4" or 6" snowflake confetti from chicoparty.com to cover your cake. This will free up some extra money to buy yummy fillings!

Snowflake Rice - Ok, so not many people are throwing rice these days, but rather than rose petals, or bubbles, why not toss snowflakes? This is another perfect way to make use of confetti. We knew right after meeting with Sarah and Eric, their wedding was going to be anything but ordinary. This Brooklyn-based couple’s wedding was filled with lots of great details from purple roosters to mango mojitos! But our favorite detail was honoring their passion for travel by replacing table numbers with destinations. A picture of the couple at each destination was framed in rustic wooden frames and the destination name was written in black marker to create the illusion the names were branded into the wood. We had tables from Alaska to Argentina - and everywhere in between!

At the suggestion of our fans, we proclaim Wednesdays to be Winter Wedding Wednesdays on our blog! Each week we will be bringing you ideas for how to incorporate the winter season into your wedding. There are lots of fun elements to winter - wool fabrics, amaryllis in bloom, snowflakes, pine cones, the list goes on! The key to winter weddings, as in any theme, is not to go overboard!

This week, we are focusing on great dessert ideas with a nod to winter. If you love snowflakes but don't think that the paper cutouts you made in second grade will coordinate with the style of your venue, check out these snowflake cookies. If you love the look of pine cones but don't want them as a centerpiece, consider adding them to your cake - it is the perfect winter accent. And of course, winter is about snuggling up and staying warm, so serve your guests a cappuccino (don't skimp on foam!) with a mini donut. We were reverently inspired by one of our new couples - during our first meeting the bride said to us, "Listen, I want to marry him and I want to throw a big party with friends and family and just have a blast. I am not picky about colors, flowers, any of it. I just want to throw the most fun wedding anyone has ever been to!"

As you might imagine, this is a planner's dream (we secretly store up ideas that clients of this nature will let us do!) But hearing her speak, we were moved by how much she was looking forward to actually enjoying her big day.

Just when we thought we knew all the great talent in New York City, in walks Josh Beckerman with a deck of cards.

Rest assure, these were no typical cards tricks – in fact after a couple of tricks, I said to myself, “No more vino for me - I must be seeing things!”

But wait, the magic is just the beginning of what he has up his sleeve! Beckerman is probably one of the funniest people we have ever encountered. We didn't stop laughing the entire time he was entertaining us and we are sure, without a doubt, that your guests will feel the same way. New and Improved!

As New Yorkers, we are always rushing somewhere, zipping through the day, and looking to cross as much as we can off of our infinite to-do lists. But alas, New York City has made life a little easier for us... well at least the process of obtaining a marriage license! In January of 2009, the city opened a newly renovated Office of the City Clerk, which is home of the Manhattan Marriage Bureau. If you have some free time, stop by 141 Worth Street and check it out!

Some of our client's favorite new features include, "...a new line-management system that tells customers their wait time; fourteen computer kiosks for online application processing; one-stop windows for service instead of multiple windows; credit card processing (replacing the need for money orders)..." Seating Cards - Not Just for Tables

We have all been there... the cocktail hour ends and we make a mad dash to the seating card table to find a little tent card with our name and table number written in calligraphy. This small folded card is the first introduction we get to the reception.

But who said that you have to put your seating cards on a table? Actually... who said that they have to be tent cards at all?

Be creative! Have fun! Think about the theme of your wedding - one of our recent couples wanted their seating cards to blend in with our design for their chic barn wedding. To accomplish this, we wrapped the front columns of the barn in thin rope and used clothespins to fasten the cards to the rope. Guests loved the authentic, creative touch!

Dancing Feet

You have heard about the second dress, but what about the second pair of shoes? Many of our brides change from traditional bridal gowns into more comfortable white party dresses half way through their reception to they can kick back and party like everyone else.

One of our summer brides took it a step further! She kicked off her heels and changed into ballet flats!

Lisa Chaffee was determined to dance on the night she become Lisa Boyle and her lovely ballet flats (above) helped her do just that!

Hello Blogosphere!

It's finally happened! We have joined the blogosphere and we're super excited to get started!

Now that we're here, we ask ourselves "What took so long?!" With the busiest season of the year (summer weddings) coming to an end, we're realizing that we have a lot to say!

This summer was saw a lot of new, fresh trends. Dessert bars became champagne bars, the hem on bridesmaid dresses keeps getting shorter, and our favorite trend of all - cupcakes - is alive and well! Lots of our clients ditched the city and headed to vineyards, beaches and barns. Yes, that's right I said barns! Stay tuned for details!
